the cold busted label unearths more funky nuggets from the fertile russian soil with this brilliant 7“ single from moscow’s anatoly ice. dj, producer, and host of the funk and beyond parties and radio show (running for nearly ten years), anatoly ice has been drawn to the swing of a phat beat for a long while. this single bursts with old school funk and new school attitude, beginning with ”something happened (2me)“. a vintage drum kit and melodic horns are joined by a big hip hop rhythm as the vocals and horn section are expertly cut up and rearranged. the song’s catchy hook – also the title – is left nearly intact and should playfully dance around any b-boy’s head as he does his thing. flip the record for ”light”, which exhibits a strutting breakbeat and some g-funk sauce in its prominent synth line. funky piano, guitar, and bass provide the backdrop, soundtracking a midnight cruise through the bad (as in good) part of town. hold tight … anatoly ice is at the wheel.

following on from his release on beneath s mistry imprint, webstarr inaugurates his de grey label with a three-track collection of bass-flecked techno. opener we can t have nice things evokes punch drunk and the bristol sound as skittering beats deliver a two-step-like rhythm, propelled along by a synth melody that teases a potent breakdown. meanwhile warsaw bumps along with a brooding bassline that gives way to multi-layered percussion direct from an eastern bloc steel mill. closing track exit changes gear to play to the floor as a piercing kick and clap drum pattern combines with the subtlest of sub-bass and sharp synths that probe behind your eyes to lift the track effortlessly in a 2016 nod to detroit.

beranek’s debut album, “sound of danger”, was released on mind expanding records in november 1981. nowhere near as accessible as the previous single, the album fared poorly commercially. withdrawing from the single’s fun, kitsch pop, the album is cool and static, driven by thin rhythm boxes, cold synths, and glacial guitars. taking heavy cues from david bowie, all of the songs are sung in a nasally english accent, a rare occurrence in norway at the time. the lyrics are melancholic, but tinged with paranoia. there are also upbeat tracks that evoke a prog or glam sensibility a la king crimson, alan parsons, or roxy music. all songs have been remastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. housed in the original jacket featuring red, black, and white lines that evoke a visualized richter scale designed by monica moltzau. each copy includes a 2-sided 8x11” insert with lyrics and an autographed press photo of beranek.

powder is an up-and-coming producer from tokyo who had put out only a couple of releases on born free and esp institute when resident advisor featured her on the monthly series breaking through this past august. inspired by her first visit to cocktail d amore in 2015, she was so enthralled by the atmosphere, she started working on an ep for the label capturing her experiences from the party. the way powder interprets sound is extremely personal and unique. the opener hip has a driving sensual groove with hints of acid, seasoned with a good amount of loons and a mysterious foggy melody while heart sounds like an italo disco aural translation of a shojo manga script for a fun in the sun tinged story. on the flip side a slowmo industrial-meets-rainforest groove characterizes hole followed by hair in which she blends many layers of rhythm patterns together.

mihai popoviciu has carved out a reputation for being one of the most innovative producers of electronic music active in europe today. the man from romania has established himself both as a highly respected producer releasing on labels such as highgrade, international gigolo and dessous and as a killer dj performing all over the world. fiction is his 4th release on poker flat recordings, and delivers four distinct flavours to sink your teeth into. i should is a slinky groover, with a slippery, evolving bassline, tight, funky percussion and a sultry female vocal. working just as effectively early in a set as a peak time moment, its bound to get rinsed in the coming months. twisted is a little harder - a straighter beat signals a more heads down approach, and the bassline is sure to trigger some dancefloor scenes wherever it gets played. next up is title track fiction which perhaps makes a reference to mihai’s background, with fragments of eastern european melodies woven into the beautiful synth work, all tied together over a spacey yet driving rhythm track. last but by no means least is interconnected - a straight up deep bomb with echoes of classic chicago deep and acidic house in its warm and sensual vibe.

dele sosimis album you no fit touch am was released in 2015 to much universal acclaim. a perfect document of the lessons the keyboard master and vocalist learned in fela kuti s ranks during the 70s and 80s, but brought firmly up-to-date and with contemporary social comment as vital to the afrobeat genre as any rhythm or instrument. in 2016, to take that forward thinking even further, wah wah 45s commissioned four huge remixes from a quartet of the uk s most interesting new production names. that was just part one of the story though this year the label can reveal the final four remixes to be taken from this hugely popular and influential project.

mystica tribe is the musical alias of tokyo-based producer, taka noda. drawing on a wide range of influences from dub, soul, bass music, rhythm and blues mystica tribe has quickly been developing a very distinctive sound that exists in a weird, freaked out zone between dub and techno. noda is especially interested in deep, psychedelic music, and this is reflected in his productions, which are equally suited for late night listening sessions or bent, broken in dancefloors. his first track, meditation stick, was released in 2011 on dutch label sd records, backed by two remixes from label owners syncom data. this was followed by two more eps on sd records in 2013: stars are mine and flowers. artists like gilles peterson and 2562 have supported these well-received releases, and his track. his temple recently appeared on pangaea s fabric live 73 mix cd. in 2014, noda is launching his own label, mystica tribe records, through which he plans to continue developing his uniquely psychedelic take on dub and techno. his recent ep, lizard, was released on his label in 2014. jade eye ep was released on his label in 2016.

late last year music for dreams released the digital album -debut- by bongo entp. this passion project from veteran studio session player jacob andersen brought us an unexpectedly fresh take on south american music traditions. on this new vinyl release, the project is both revisited and expanded upon. cherry picking some of the grooviest cuts from the album for this ep, we also get remix treatments from well sourced collaborators selvagem & carrot green. both hailing from brazil, these producers certainly know how to work latin percussion on a dancefloor. taking on the dreamy cover version of henri mancini’s classic -lujón- (original included too), carrot green ups the tempo and wrangles the elements of the original into something completely different. adding a house kick and dark acid undertones, he takes you on a wet trip with lots of twists and turns. the production duo of selvagem manage something similar with one of the looser bongo entp. jams. the original -foto feita do aviaõ is a jazzy scat sinaalong tune. in selvagem’s hands, it turns into an epic cosmic disco groover, locked into place by a muscular baseline. the vocal chants of the original are here, but used in a lower key and more sparingly to punctuate the bounce of the rhythm. the vinyl includes two other album highlights - the cafe del mar classic -el rey de pollo- , a santana-style chill-out affair featuring mikkel nordsø of bombay hotel fame and finally the moody -spanish winter- with its robotic reggae-like groove and syrup-thick synthesizers bubbling in a bittersweet fashion. a superb package.

after an amazing 2016 year remixing legend mobys porcelain for drumcode, releasing on labels like soma, drumcode (with his phoenix as well), kaputt ltd, planet rhythm, tip top, label owner luca agnelli is back on his own etruria beat. this new release contains 2 original cuts and 2 remixes by amazing artists abstract division and yotam avni. original tracks metamorphosis and chaos are very powerful techno tunes, filled with hypnotic looped chords, melodic synth stabs on solid beats and drops. dynamic reflections owner abstract division revisited metamorphosis in a very mental trippy way, adding a dutch raw and dark touch to the title. after a few releases on innervisions, stroboscopic artefact, yotam avni transformed metamorphosis into a pumping groovy track that can destroy any dancefloor. play it loud!

(kompakt 354 cd 134). the spontaneous, organic vibe and sample artistry of the album is reflected in three distinct reworks from highly respected kompakt mainstays the field, dave dk and jÖrg burger - all of them informed with surprising twists and displaying a clear lineage to the source material. the field’s remix of 9 elms over river eno takes the original s percussive part and unfolds it to a swirling, tropical epic that alludes as much to the orb s multifaceted sound collages as it does to the hypnotic, looping flow of the field s own output. meanwhile, dave dk turns in a club-friendly revamp of 4am exhale with the fittingly titled accellerator mix, indulging in exquisitely lyrical glitches and the magic of the straight bassdrum. jÖrg burger takes a shot at the beatless 5th dimensions with the excellent dschungeloper mix - its loose pop jam feeling and flirty shuffle rhythm recall burger’s lush lounge core efforts under his triola monicker.

after mathematics, bio rhythm and la beauté du négatif, american artist deviere is back on parisian label unlearn. lobster theremin artist and unlearn affiliate royer is on remix duty. water drums (a1), a deep and spacey cut reminds a joey-anderson-esque imagery for a moody and introspective club experience. strong yet subtle in the low end, this one is for the big sound systems. royer’s demi-monde remix comes up as a more housy interpretation, mixing dubby inspirations with lo-fi aesthetics. reminiscent of kyle hall’s early works on moods and grooves, rising (b1) is an upfront dancefloor track suited for peak time euphoria. speak into existence (b2) is probably the most accessible track of the ep, oscillating between acid-yet-warm feelings and solemn preacher-preachin’ vibes.
